February 2021 Totals
Five months out from IM Lake Placid 2021, here is how things went:
Swim - 9275 yards in 3 hours (up from last month)
Bike - 330 miles in 18 hours, 36 minutes (down from last month, but most ever for a February)
Run - 59.1 miles in 10 hours, 45 minutes (down from last month)
Weight Lifting - 2 hours 24 minutes (down from last month)
Total Hours for month - 34 hours, 45 minutes (down from last month)
Training Stress Score (TSS) - 1953 (down from last month)
Intensity factor - .72 average / workout (-.03 from last month)
Chronic Training Load (CTL) on Febr, 2021 - 66 (+7 from last month)
You will easily notice I'm down a little this month in several areas from January. This is due to a (hopefully) slight injury at the beginning of the month while using my TRX straps. I performed some of those exercises incorrectly and hurt my left hip area. This caused me to reduce load and intensity at the beginning of the month.
Now that we are at the end of the month, here are the upsides:
- The injury seems to be mostly under control at this point. There is some weakness still, but I believe things are going in the right direction.
- For any February since I've started to record, this is the highest biking mileage
- My Chronic Training load number is now at 66, so there is a nice increase there.
While I was worried at the beginning of the month due the injury, I am ending the month feeling encouraged after a strong 3 hour, 45 minute ride today with a .67 intensity factor (i.e. the intensity an IM is typically ridden at).
I am hopeful about he month coming up and looking forward to some warm weather training at the end of the month.
Shout out to Ryan and Eddie for some really great training this past month. Ryan looks on track for a really strong base phase. For Eddie, I'm impressed with his training and preparation (and I'm pretty sure he's heard enough suggestions from me at this point :-).

End of Jan 2021 Total
Here are some totals to quantify IM training six months out from IM Lake Placid 2021.
Swim - 8100 yards in 2 hours, 40 minutes
Bike - 343 miles in 19 hours, 33 minutes
Run - 68.7 miles in 10 hours, 23 minutes
Weight Lifting - 4 hours 52 minutes
Total Hours for month - 36 hours, 18 minutes
Training Stress Score (TSS) - 2193
Intensity factor - .75 average / workout
Chronic Training Load (CTL) on January 31, 2021 - 59
It was not a bad month given that swimming is so limited. For any January since I've started to record, this is the highest biking mileage and the most number of hours ever (but that is due to me keeping track of weight lifting which I've been doing more specifically since I haven't been able to swim).
As far as TSS goes, the weight lifting being added in probably influenced the following as well where we can look at TSS in Januarys of the past:
- Jan 12 - 1415 - pre IM Mont Tremblant
- Jan 17 - 1478
- Jan 18 - 2116 - pre IM Lake Placid #1
- Jan 21 - 2193
Given Jan 12 and Jan 17 (two other pretty intense Januaries that I've got solid data for), this month is step up and is comparable to Jan 18. I definitely felt it.
More soon. Thanks for reading! Keep doing your thing like I do my thing.

Current HR Zones - Running
I've read the Sally Edwards books on HR training previously and continue to not subscribe to 220 minus age to determine Max heart rate.
